Woodcut? stunning style, would not have guessed woodcut though. love the darkness and contrast. Those deep shadows you've mentioned really seem to be at play here. So rich. 

That one highlight in his eye bugs me. After consideration, I'd like to see a highlight in the other eye too, rather than no highlights at all. The highlights always remind me of their being life in people's eyes, like magic.
