We indulged in impiety, greed and avarice, and forgot holiness amid our glittering cities. Grendel, child of Cain came - was sent - as a scourge, and she invaded Heorot, Hrothgar's Holy Hall, and laid bare the degradation and decay on which our urban lives were built. This was a time that called out for a hero - but we had banished all the heroes. And no Beowulf came to redeem us.
