There were rules, clearly listed:

High-necked clothing at all times.

Skirts and dresses long enough to cover the ankles.

Corsets mandatory for formal occasions.

Gloves outside the home.

Hair covered by bonnet or hat when in public.

Absolute abstinence from alcohol and modern entertainment media.
