Based on the character of Vila Restal from Blake's 7, as played by Michael Keating.

A native of Earth and a member of the lowly Delta grade criminal underclass, Vila is a petty thief who meets Blake in the detention cell awaiting transport to penal planet Cygnus Alpha. Whilst Blake was asleep, Vila was picking his pockets.

Vila is more intelligent than his Delta grade rating would suggest, and he claims to have bought that designation to avoid being drafted as a spaceship captain. What is certain is that Vila is a gifted lock-picker who can break into the most sophisticated security systems, an ability that makes him useful to Blake's crew. As Avon admits, "... we can easily replace a pilot, but a talented thief is rare."

Vila is often lazy and cowardly, preferring to evade danger. As he says, his aim is "...to live forever, or die trying."
