An untamable beast of immense strength, more like a wild primeval ox or rhinoceros than the delicate horse-like unicorn of later fantasy. It belongs to the open wilderness: solitary, mountain-haunting, impossible to yoke, and too free for domestication. Its horn, or in some tellings its mighty pair of horns, rises as an emblem of force, dignity, and royal power. Later tradition enlarges it into something nearly colossal, a creature so vast that ordinary landscapes seem barely able to contain it. Its hide is rough and earthen, its neck heavy, its eyes deep-set and calm, its tread like distant thunder. It is not a glittering magical creature, but an ancient, physical presence: noble, serene, and majestic from afar.
