Marianne von Werefkin (Марианна Владимировна Верёвкина, Marianna Vladimirovna Veryovkina; 1860 – 1938) was a Russian artist, who also lived in Germany and Switzerland. She is celebrated as a central part of the German Expressionism movement. Despite a hunting accident in 1888 that crippled her right hand, she persisted and continued to use drawing and painting instruments. Her art was characterised by vibrant colours and expressive landscapes. She and her partner, painter Alexej von Jawlensky, were primary members of the Expressionism artist groups Neue Künstlervereinigung München (N.K.V.M.) and Der Blaue Reiter. The latter is the first modernist secession which is regarded as a forerunner and pathfinder for Modern art in 20th-century Germany.
