The Universes We Let Disappear

The Caribbean monk seal and Indigenous Caribbean peoples belonged to a world of rich coastal ecosystems where land and sea were deeply connected. The seal disappeared after centuries of exploitation, hunting and environmental transformation following colonisation, while Indigenous cultures faced displacement and disruption of their ancestral relationship with the islands. This imagined encounter returns to a Caribbean ocean world where human and animal histories were once inseparable.
