Edward Jenner observed the young cow maids who contracted cowpox and didn't get smallpox. He realised that there was a link between the two. He used cowpox scabs to infect young James Phipps with cowpox and then infected him with smallpox to test his theory. Luckily, the boy survived, giving rise to the first vaccination. Jenner then used a form of inserting this into the nose rather than injection. This led to the eradication of smallpox.
