All non-Italians are always very intrigued by the Befana. It is an Italian tradition that on the night of Epiphany (January 6th), an ugly and scruffy-looking witch arrives flying on a broomstick bringing gifts to good k!ds and lumps of coal to bad ones.
While she is by all accounts an ugly and spooky witch, she is also considered good, and never will any Italian ch-1ld be afraid of the Befana -- she is much loved.
I wasn't afraid, no one is -- and everyone waits to find out what's in the stockings left there specifically (usually on the mantelpiece, when there are any) on the evening of January 5th.
