Some pirate maps utilized an "X marks the spot" trope, popularized by Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island." In reality, pirates often used landmarks and celestial navigation. An ancient artifact, the Piri Reis map, dating back to 1513, is believed to depict parts of Antarctica. Additionally, there's a phenomenon called "phantom islands," fictitious lands appearing on maps due to cartographic errors or navigational myths, adding an element of mystery to these quests for hidden treasures.
