I wonder if it happens in the wild. The way some mammals adopt other species offspring..

It's an intriguing question.  According to Google, kangaroos are known to adopt joeys of other species.  But Tasmanian Devils do not.  They apparently even kill their own joeys because litter sizes regularly exceed their ability to suckle them all.  With litter sizes of between 20 and 30, it seems unlikely that unsatisfied maternal instinct would be a thing.
