Local Lore of the area says that an early Tennessee settler and his family were tormented nightly by the sound of screams. After many days, the man decided to take his gun and search for the source of the sound, instructing his wife and children to lock up and only open the door for him.
For a time, he followed the screams, though each time he grew closer...the screams seemed to come from another direction...then the screams began to mingle with the sounds of others...sounds he followed back to his own home...where he found his wife and children slaughtered.
From there, the stories diverge.
Some say he went out once more, this time looking for vengeance, only to see a beast, linking the tale to other local legends involving escaped circus beast, even werewolves.
Still others say he saw woman shrouded in mist...blue flames at her feet. This particular version seems to link the Screamer to the Celtics Banshee, whose scream is death omen.
