**1994: “I love you so much!”**

**Part 1.** “Now we're alone. Are we really going to do this?” asked Finni as he looked out of the window with Danny. Outside, the tail lights of Finni's parents' car were disappearing into the darkness. The two boys stood close together, as if to reassure each other that it was really happening: the house was empty. The night belonged to them.

Danny turned to him, his eyes wide awake and sparkling. “Yes, definitely!” he said. There was an excited gleam in his eyes—like an adventure that had no end.

Finni looked at his watch: “We can actually go now. He said he'd be there at 7:00 p.m.” Without another word, they put on their jackets and shoes. Their bikes were leaning against each other in front of the front door, as if it were the most natural thing in the world—both the same model. They had picked them out together. Finni loved the sight of them. Something about it always touched him: a sign that they belonged together.

**Part 2.** The air was surprisingly mild for a November evening. Only a slight chill touched their skin, not unpleasant, but like a promise of winter days to come. The streets lay quiet in deep darkness, broken only by the golden glow of the streetlights and the warm light shining from the windows of the houses. Finni loved this contrast – the glow in the blackness. It was an image that remained etched in his memory, year after year.

Five minutes later, they stopped in front of the small kiosk. Finni had been a regular customer here since he was eight years old. He still remembered the candy bags he used to buy with Mario, Rangi, and Chris—wine gums, licorice wheels, little fizzy candies that tingled on the tongue like a happy secret. Later, he had come with Sammy. They had calculated which of the many wonderful computer magazines they could afford with their small allowance.

**Part 3.** Later, when Danny, Steve, and Luke had become his best friends, the four of them came here to get chocolate bars, cola, chips, and teen magazines where they learned more about movies, bands—and themselves. They laughed at poorly printed posters, secretly read the articles about puberty, and giggled about things they didn't quite understand but found very intriguing.

But today was different.

Today they wanted to buy something that made Finni uncomfortable. Something he didn't want to say out loud because it seemed taboo in his parents' house. He knew he wanted to try it. That it was part of this evening. But there was a tingling sensation in his stomach, as if with every passing minute he was venturing a little further into unknown territory.

“Here we are!” said Danny as they braked and leaned their bikes against the wall. The boy they knew from school was already standing in the doorway of the kiosk. They greeted him. He just nodded, then disappeared inside.
