I think the song is very emotional. The experience of missing out on contact with a girl and later being frustrated is something many men can relate to. Yes, I wasn't brave enough back then. So much the better if the "anger" at my own cowardice at least made me do better the next time - with another girl.
Frankie Laine - incomparable. Even in this song.
