The Palio di Siena has been a tradition horse race in the Tuscan city of Siena since the 17th century. The race is held in the Piazza del Campo, the main square of Siena, and is one of the most famous and intense traditional events in Italy.

The Palio is a medieval-style horse race where ten horses and riders, representing different neighborhoods (or contrade) of Siena, compete against each other. The contrade are distinct districts within the city, each with its own emblem, colors, and identity.

The winning contrada receives a silk banner, known as the "Palio," which is hand-painted by a different artist for each race. The Palio is a symbol of honor and pride for the winning contrada, and it is displayed prominently in their district until the next race.
