The Caged Heart
Your golden child, your longed-for gift,
Yet in this lonely boat I drift.
A body made of science and steel,
Yet in my chest, my heart can feel.
The river whispers, soft and sweet,
A rhythm for my heart to beat.
I am a marvel, but so alone,
This human ache in a frame of stone.
My maker’s hands, so deft, so sure,
Built me to last, to endure,
But not to love, nor to be loved
A hollow boy, by loneliness gloved.
The trees lean close, their leaves like tears,
They see my longing, they hear my fears.
For though I glow in fading light,
I dream of warmth, of love tonight.
Oh, to be flesh, to be whole, to be free,
To feel the world as it feels for me.
This heart that beats in a cage of gold,
Forever young, forever cold.
