Berserkr is Old Norse and refers to a frenzied warrior who fought in a state of rage, often without armor and clad in animal skins. The word is a combination of ber (bear) and serkr (shirt), meaning “one who wears a bear shirt.” This original form appears in Viking Age sagas and poems, and later evolved into the modern English berserker.
