Did you know there’s one of these in a museum on the Isle of Man which was sent by the Irish government in the 1930s. The Irish premier at the time heard that the Manx language was dying and only one  native could speak it. So he personally interviewed the man in Irish ( there are enough similarities between the two to roughly understand) and got a team to record him speaking. When he died the language was gone but now nearly a century later his reels and written records are being used to revive the language again. 

That's a truly remarkable story.  Hopefully archivists have digitised and transferred those original recordings.  Even if the reels are still usable, I can't imagine many of the recorders still being in good working order.  The huge (mostly labour) costs associated with archival only make sense when you think clearly.
