In institutional and everyday spaces (like universities) the male gaze functions as a mechanism of intimidation and containment. One study found that bodies negotiate patriarchal boundaries via self-monitoring and protective postures in response to gaze. This means that desire becomes conditioned by fear of being watched rather than the possibility of being together—to be seen and subject rather than active partner.
