Before he became known by his epitaph as the Grey Necromancer, he was Derael Anga'ar the Broken Handed. Thus named for the wound he received as a youth from a particularly temperamental horse. But despite the injury, he still made up for his deficiency through learning to adapt knife movements in place of hand movements as he learned magic.
Soon he was able to transmute steel claw in place of his ruined hand and further increase his skill in the magical arts and eventually forging a soul blade to aid with his binding, commanding, and raising of the undead.
