James Rizzi

James Rizzi (1950 – 2011) was an artist from the USA, known for his unique contribution to the Pop Art movement. His vibrant and childlike imagery, combined with his innovative techniques, set him apart in the art world. Rizzi developed a distinctive style that involved creating a silkscreen print, hand-colouring it, and then attaching cut-outs with adhesive foam to create a three-dimensional effect. This technique, which cleverly combined graphic art, painting, and sculpture, became his trademark. His work is characterised by its merry maximalism, teeming anthropomorphic cityscapes, and a delight in delirious detail. In his later years, his paintings evolved to combine a Picasso meets Hanna-Barbera drawing style with an increasingly chromatic palette and a complex graphic structure that simultaneously evoked Cubism and the most sophisticated Amerindian friezes.
