The challenge was to create something that you normally would not. And to say the least, this is very, very challenging. I made a list of things I could not use (and use the list as a prompt later for my own amusement). I tried some various things but realized it still needed to be MINE somehow, so I dug into my history. Josie was my great-great grandmother (father/grandfather/great-grandmother/Josie) who immigrated to the US from the Northern area of Italy in the early 1910s. Her husband died on the way over, my great-grandmother was a baby at the time. She married again soon after arriving and they moved to a very small mining town in in Middle America. Then her second husband died while she was pregnant with her second child. After that, she began to take in laundry for the local community. The clothing worn in the mines got very, very dirty and it took a great deal to get it clean. She was not treated kindly by the local populace, but she continued on

This impressionist painting depicts a young Italian immigrant mother in rural 1910s America, carrying laundry baskets between homes. The scene captures a moment of hardship and struggle.
