Horseshoe crabs, despite the name, are not crustaceans.
Atlantic horseshoe crab blood contains Limulus amebocyte lysate, a chemical used to detect bacterial endotoxins in parenteral products to ensure sterility, their blood saves lives.
500,000 are harvested annually for this purpose.
Fortunately scientists have recently been able to produce rFC enzyme synthetically which can be used in the same way.
