Backstory File: “The Selachium egg was found near one of our deep-sea probe sites, seemingly attached to the rocky outcrop by fibrous tendrils. At first glance, we assumed it was an unremarkable deep-sea shark egg. However, the toxicity of the surrounding slime raises some questions about this creature’s unique adaptations. Unlike most deep-sea eggs, this one seems more resilient, perhaps due to the extreme conditions of the trench.”
