“They’re called Zero Point Modules. Zee Pee Ems for short. They’re an Ancient power source.” Larkin started to remember Doctor Zelenka’s explanation of how the ZPM worked but gave it up, since the Czech was better articulated to tell the technical aspects of the ZPM than he. 

“It extracts vacuum energy from an artificial region of subspace-time until it reaches maximum entropy and is depleted,” Fairbairn said. 

“I think I get the idea,” Helena said. “Limited firepower, limited power, old ship, lots of problems, so little time.”

“Indeed, Sister,” Fairbairn said. She turned to Colonel Larkin. “Colonel, it looks like the number two sublight engine is badly damaged.”

“What about the number one sublight engine?” Larkin asked.


“Well, hear it for yourself,” the Scot replied as she pressed several leavers on the console. The engine began to sputter and give out. Fairbairn waited a moment, then repeated the same sequence. The engine spattered and looked like it might turn over. Just then there was an explosion from outside. The three looked out a window and smoke was billowing from the engine bell. The engine croaked and gargled.

“Well, that didn’t go well,” said Larkin.

“No sir,” affirmed Fairbairn. The hyperdrive is in Not much better shape. I probably could coax one or two jumps out of her.”

“Alright what about getting the hangar open?”

“We just need the password to the hangar,” Fairbairn replied. Perhaps it’s somewhere in the *Thalassikiatos’* computer.”

“The *Thalasa* what?” Larkin asked.

“The *Thalassikiatos,* the name of the ship. Apparently, she was an Ancient philosopher, poet, and cartographer in days of yore.”

“We’ll I’m *not* saying that every time we radio home,” Larkin said, in a humph. 

“With respect sir, I’m not sure I can say it more than once,” said Fairbairn.

“You said it twice,” corrected Helena.

“We’ll come up with a new name for the ship ourselves,” Larkin said. “However, we’re not calling her the *Enterprise*; nor *Defiant*, *Voyager*, *Discovery*, *Protostar*, *Orville*, or *Cerritos*. This isn’t a fan convention.”

“I wasn’t going to suggest it, sir,” said Fairbairn.

“Nor I,” Helena added. “I bet you’ll pick a meaningful name for her.”

“Indeed, Sister,” said Larkin. He turned to Fairbairn. “Fairbairn, can you fix her?”

“If I had belt buckles, shoelaces and a stick of gum, I might,” Fairbairn said sarcastically.

“Tell me you’ve got some good news, Fairbairn,” said Larkin. He and Sister Helena stood in front of a triangle shaped pillar that came up to Their waists. Fairbairn stood at a console opposite them. She pressed some buttons on the console and three stained glass cylindrical devices emerged from the pillar. Two were dark but one was lit. It glowed a golden yellow with pieces of green and red pieces of stained glass peppered throughout the cylinder.

“That doesn’t look good,” Larkin said with a look of concern on his face.

“Yep. Two of the Zed Pee Ems are depleted, and the third one has 25% of power remaining. And it’s now having to do the work of all three of them,” Fairbairn replied.

“What are they?” Helena asked curiously.
