After the Trojan War ended, Ulysses returned to Ithaca. During the journey home, he was detained by the sorceress Circe, who had turned his companions into pigs. Ulysses held a bunch of *moly*—a magical plant given to him by Hermes that protected him from enchantments. Unable to transform him, Circe proposed that he become her lover, but he first demanded that she break the spell. Circe immediately restored his companions to human form; they emerged even younger and more handsome than before. Afterward, Ulysses and his men stayed with Circe for a full year before resuming their journey to Ithaca.
