Oscar Wilde was an Irish poet and playwright who lived in the late 19th century. He is known for his biting wit, flamboyant style, and controversial works.

In The Picture of Dorian Gray, Basil Hallward is an artist who becomes infatuated with a young man named Dorian Gray. Basil paints a stunning portrait of Dorian that captures his youth and beauty. When Dorian sees the finished painting, he makes a wish that the portrait would age instead of him. This wish comes true in a supernatural way, and Dorian pursues a life of hedonism and debauchery while staying eternally youthful.

Basil is horrified when he realizes the influence the portrait is having over Dorian. As Dorian descends deeper into a world of crime, cruelty and sin, the portrait becomes uglier and more distorted. Basil confronts Dorian and begs him to repent, but Dorian murders Basil in a rage. Basil's artistic obsession with Dorian led to his ultimate demise, making him a tragic figure in the gothic story.
