A friend once said the rat and the stairs were the best actors in that movie.

The way that rat sat, stoney still, emotionless, barely breathing on the cold silver - plated serving platter was indeed, legendary. Rumour has it, that the rat even maintained its "dead" demeanour after Blanche (Joan Crawford) hurriedly pushed it off the table. The director had to check on the welfare and dead/alive state of the rat a good 2 minutes after the camera stopped rolling. They had a couple of rubber, life-like rats in the props dept but as we all know, they were never needed for that potentially Oscar™®© winning *Silver Platter* scene.

Stillness is a lost art from the golden age of Hollywood... these young actors, always active, don't know how to play it down. OK some say the stairs were wooden, but that's proper method. And as for the legendary frozen rat stance. Stone-cold scene stealer, was robbed of the Oscar by the then rat-phobic Hollywood of that era (and I suspect a campaign among the academy orchestrated by his main rivals Disney and that nasty piece of work Mickey Mouse). Yes, let's hear it for the under-appreciated rodent thespians, from the uncredited role in King Rat.. the scene opposite Sean Connery in diamonds Are Forever... the famous Scottish accent in the Young Ones.... to Roland Rat and his "rat-fans" who saved breakfast TV (taking nothing away from Errol the Hamster and Kevin The Gerbil, but Roland was the star). Isn't it about time Disney stopped flogging that has-been Mickey, and brought out a live action Ratatouille. fans will be gnawing through the skirting board at the box-office to see that.
