Whenever a place or a thing changes from one state to another, there is a time and space in between, a liminal state from the Latin, limen meaning threshold. an in-between place, a place of transition, a time of waiting and not knowing. Dawn and dusk are considered liminal places. This is a time that is considered magical and sacred in Celtic spirituality and many Indigenous cultures.
These periods can also include times when contrary states draw near each other. Ghosts are mostly likely to walk when the realms of the dead and the living draw near, which is often but not always a liminal time, such as year's end.
Liminal times are notoriously dangerous for people if they are unaware of tresspassing upon reverance for such moments. This is so even when they are merely transitions from one time of day to another, such dawn into day, dusk into twilight and the midnight hour between days.
