The Lançados (literally "the castaways" or "the thrown ones") were Portuguese outcasts and convicts (degredados) during the 15th and 16th centuries who were deliberately abandoned along the West African coast.

Their Mission: They served as intermediaries ("línguas") for the Portuguese Crown. Their job was to survive, learn local languages, and establish trade routes for gold, ivory, and spices.

Integration: Unlike traditional settlers, they fully integrated into African societies. They married local women, adopted indigenous customs, and formed a new, influential Luso-African merchant class.

Cultural Legacy: They were pioneers of Atlantic trade and played a crucial role in the development of Creole languages and cultures in regions like Guinea and Cape Verde.

Autonomy: Over time, many Lançados became independent traders, often defying the Portuguese monopoly to trade on their own terms.
