Brings up fond memories. Although this isn't the mediterranean, of course, nor is the grouper a mediterranean-variety grouper. I should know, I used to hunt them, decades ago.

I've never hunted but i'm a scubadiver. my favorite place for diving in summer is in South of France (near my parents'home) in the Natural Reservation "Parc National de Port Cros". There are lots of big and beautiful Grouper fishes there. I was there this afternoon (but only snorkeling, no scuba this year due to medical reasons). And yes, this is not a very common grouper, probably a "Nightcafeius grouper" variety 

Never wore scuba gear. Perhaps I should try it one day.

I used to hunt groupers with snorkelling gear. Then I got married, couldn't spend enough time in the water to stay in shape, so I quit hunting. And then, several years after that, a very good friend who was also my fishing partner and essentially my teacher, drowned. After that I didn't even feel like fishing.

The last grouper I caught must have been around 1992 or 1993.

When my daughter was a kid, she would snorkel alongside me and I would catch (with my hands) octopi - we would play with them, them let them free.

I am still snorkelling when I get the chance, but strictly for sightseeing these days. My last "catch" (i.e. the last interesting sea creature I saw) was a sea turtle a few weeks ago - around 50-70 cm, I would guess.

Are there groupers in Port Cros in shallow enough waters that you can see them from the surface? Is the national parc guarded well enough that they feel and are safe?
