If you’re familiar with twerking, perrear is the reggaeton version of it. I love the beats in reggaeton, but the culture can be full of machismo and often comes across as misogynistic and homophobic—even though most artists in the genre would deny it.
Neoperreo flips that narrative. The stars and subjects of the lyrics are gays, lesbians, and gender-fluid people. The sound is more experimental and raw, in the way metal or punk relates to traditional rock music.
The dancing style is very provocative, shifting from being a passive object of desire to becoming an active participant. I could go on, but it also connects to deeper histories—there’s something there about slavery, about reclaiming control over bodies and sexuality. It’s a very layered topic.
