Historical note: telescopic rifle sights were used in the Great Anglo Boer War (second War of Independence) but were issued to only British forces and on an experimental basis.  The Afrikaner *boer* (farmer) militia marksmen relied primarily on open iron sights, although a captured "khaki" rifle would have come in handy.
