Ross Ruad was a High King of Ireland and a famous warrior of the "Red Branch" (the elite warrior cult of Ulster). He is often linked to the River Boyne and the lands surrounding it.
His descendants and the "Red Branch Knights" are the primary warriors of the Ulster Cycle, many of whose most famous battles (like Cú Chulainn’s) take place at river crossings.
