The 1739 treaty gave them land and freedom, but it also required them to return runaway enslaved people — which caused tensions later. Conflicts over land and British control flared up again in the 1790s, though the Maroons’ legacy of independence still lives on today.🫶🙏

Were the French involved at some point, or was this an entirely British occupation? So, I'm going to guess the Imperialists were on the verge of losing control altogether, in so far as they were willing to negotiate with escaped slaves.  I wonder if that deal was the blueprint for the southern US states Fugitive Slave Act?
