Something may have been translated that way for it, but the sidhe are the people of the mounds in Irish lore; the inhabitants who came to the land before the humans and are thought of as the "Good Neighbors" or "Gentry", many of whom were revered as gods and even the lesser ones were skilled in magic and warfare, but many were vulnerable in some way to iron. 

It's this group that many now think of as "faeries" tho that is a British tradition that is much more innocuous-seeming at this point in time than their original context and the context they are often framed as still by some Irish people and many witches and magicians. Probably more appropriate is the idea of "Elves" or similar beings who are often as large or larger than humans.

Interesting i was familiar with the irish mythos only vaguely.
