Margaretha Haverman

Margaretha Haverman (1693 – after 1739) was a renowned 18th-century artist from the Netherlands, known for her vibrant and lifelike flower and fruit paintings. She was a pupil of famous Dutch artist Jan van Huysum and her style was heavily influenced by him. Her technique involved the use of innovative pigments such as Prussian Blue, and she meticulously layered opaque and translucent paint to achieve a luminous quality in her works. However, her use of organic yellow lake pigment has faded over time, resulting in the present blue appearance of the leaves in her paintings. Despite her evident skill, only two of her works survive today. Haverman was part of the Dutch Golden Age art movement, a period when Dutch art, especially painting, reached its peak. Her meticulously detailed and colourful flower paintings contributed to the still life genre of this movement.
