After a long while, she reached for her breviary, the leather worn smooth at the edges. She opened it carefully, finding the ribbon for Compline by touch alone. She had just begun to rise when she heard the soft creak of the chapel door.



Helena stepped into the Holy House Chapel. It was small, yet it never felt confined. Dark timber panels lined the walls, and the beams arched overhead like the ribs of an upturned ship, catching the soft glow of candlelight. Beeswax and old incense lingered in the air, and the hush of the room seemed to slow even her breathing.

A narrow stained-glass window washed the floor in muted blues and greens. The altar stood plain and dignified beneath a small, time-worn image, the sanctuary lamp burning steadily beside it. Along the walls, modest statues kept quiet watch over rows of flickering votive candles.

The worn wood of the chairs and kneelers spoke of generations who had come here carrying burdens they could not name. Nothing in the chapel urged haste. Everything invited stillness — a place where silence felt full, and the weight of the world could rest for a while.
