Manhattan’s West Side as Light Painting

Manhattan’s West Side skyline viewed from the cliffs of Cliffside Park across the reflective black waters of the Hudson River on a moonless night. The skyline glows like a vast electric cathedral — towers and glass facades blazing with warm gold, cool cyan, and scattered crimson light beneath a deep velvet-black sky devoid of stars.

Foreground: rain-slick overlooks and winding roads atop the Palisades reflecting neon and sodium-vapor streetlights. At first, chaotic long-exposure light painting streaks slash across the composition — tangled ribbons from speeding cars, glowing wakes from ferries and tugboats on the Hudson, looping helicopter arcs, and streaming airliner trails overhead.

But the luminous chaos gradually coalesces into a mesmerizing “skydance” of light suspended above and over Manhattan’s West Side skyline.
