On the wallaby (ii)

The expression 'on the wallaby' became prevalent during the Great Depression, when groups of unemployed men travelled around Australia looking for work.

'On the wallaby' first appeared (in print) in 'The Waler's Rhyme' (aka 'Lime-Juice Tub'), published in the Bulletin in 1898.

So, an expression very much linked to sheep-shearing and the wool industry, from a time when Australia 'rode on the sheep's back'. These days it means to work your way around the country.

They tar the sheep till they're nearly black

Roll up roll up and get the sack

Once more we're away on the Wallaby Track

Once more to look for the shearing oh!
