Just a fantasy as if Henri Rosseau had been the one to cohabit with Van Gogh for a while leading to a long productive friendship.  While he was truly infantile compared to Van Gogh's wellspring of talent, Gogh's fantasies for the orient combined with his longing to see the Jungle.  As an import tax collector he himself contacted many travelers and heard about Siam and Thailand and Formosa so made images inspired by their mythic (pre Westerner) past.  And in this alternative world Van Gogh had a friend who wasn't crazy, thus helped him during his breakdowns and there wasn't an Ear thing.
