Alfred Wallis

Alfred Wallis (1855 – 1942) was a British self-taught artist, known for his distinctive Naïve style and maritime-themed paintings. Wallis's work is characterised by its simplicity and directness, often depicting coastal scenes and ships with a childlike quality. He primarily used household paint on cardboard and other found materials, creating works that are both economical and expressive. Wallis's technique involved bold, flat colours and a lack of perspective, which contributed to the unique charm and authenticity of his art. His work has been influential in the development of British modernism, particularly within the St. Ives art community.
