In Greek mythology, Nerites was the only brother of the 50 nereids, or sea spirits (the saltwater analogue to the freshwater naiads). Aphrodite was infatuated with him, but when she asked him to to go Mount Olympus with her, even offering him a pair of wings, he refused, preferring to stay in the sea.
