After British control of coastal Ceylon (1796) the uplands were cleared for coffee and then tea; land alienation, importation of indentured labour from South India, brutal work cycles and collapse of subsistence economies produced chronic suffering and localized deaths measured in the thousands to tens of thousands over decades.
