The last Rose

The greenhouse groaned under the weight of time, its glass fractured like the lines on Clara’s hands. Inside, the air smelled of damp earth and fading memories. Most of the flowers had surrendered—brown husks clinging to brittle stems. But there, in the center, stood a rose. Not just any rose. Her rose. Clara reached out, her fingers—gnarled from decades of work—brushing the petal. It was soft. Alive. A splash of red in a world turning gray. She remembered the day she’d planted it, her husband’s laughter still warm in her ears. "For you," he’d said. "So you always have something beautiful." The years had taken him. Then the children. Then the village’s attention. But the rose had stayed. Blooming, year after year, as if it knew she needed it. She plucked it carefully, the thorn pricking her skin just enough to remind her she was still here. Still alive. Outside, the wind howled. Clara tucked the rose into her silver hair and smiled. Some stories don’t end. They just change.
