This was supposed to be a different couple from a different book, but that's OK. This still fits a couple from one of my four books.
Raven grew up taking it for granted that she'd end up marrying her best friend since they were babies, Robbie ... eventually.
Mikaela is a trans girl who met Raven and Robbie when they were all in middle school and she went by "Mikey."
Raven thought Mikey was a boy, Robbie thought Mikey was a girl, and they all had crushes on each other, but nothing happened, and eventually, Raven and Robbie went back to being so caught up in each other that there was no room for someone else.
And then college happened. When Robbie got tired of waiting for Raven to decide it was time for them to be a couple, he met Bella, and Raven found her old friend Mikaela was still there.
The world's full of terrible things, we see them on the news every day, but there is also room for joy. You just have to keep your eyes open for it.
