There was a brightly painted lipstick-red wooden door with a little sort of gated peephole at eye level and after doing The Secret Knock you'd hear the little eyegate open and would be asked for the Secret Password I was never privvy to the password, but rumors have it that it was "Ooh Matron!" I can just imagine, dozens of gentlemen callers, at all times of the night, going up the back passage and calling out "Ooh, Matron!" and allowed to slip in discretely.
