You can find a cheerful linguistic essay in the comments on this image. During my time at NC, I often talked with my NC friends about differences between English and German. Especially with @Viola_Sororia @Bonampak and @LazyR
This inspired me to write this essay. More will follow if there is enough interest.
Some of my other NC friends will now perhaps understand why I have to smile when they talk about the cat named Lancelot eating:

I love how cool and clever the games are :) I always comment and I'm willing to learn new things!!
I have not looked into German, linguistics as of yet, but I understand it perfectly. In Polish a lot of words will apply to humans, or animals. I guess we can exchange the descriptions depending on the manners (so pretty similar to German) - a hungry person will "devour" their food, same as the animal. There is more than just one word to describe - "how" you eat.

My dear Finni. That was a very interesting essay to read. Being born German but using English for many many years the thing with the "eating" never really occured to me ( I don't have the linguistic background ofc) - so I really learned something new today. 🥰👍
Like most I simply use the words how we learned to use them.
Directly when I read the word "fressen" and the somewhat comedic use of it when it comes to people I remembered a quote from an old Bud Spencer movie - where seeing food on the table he says "Da lacht das Herz, wenn's was zu fressen gibt!" - a word I remembered and use regularly 🤣🤣🤣
One thing about the "fressen" tho... it's not only reserved for the youngsters... My father (born 1949) uses it on certain occasions (especially if he likes the food he would say "Kann man fressen!").
Love the picture of the dragonfly ofc... I wonder if she also said Grace before starting to eat 🙏
