My brother raised Pitt bulls, (caveat he was breeding sweet smart dogs for single women, older women with "empty nest syndrome and newlyweds with or expecting babies.)
He was trying convince my mom she needed a Pitt, not the lab ( who acted like a puppy, full grown)
He reasoned with her, cajoled her and browbeat her for three hours.
My mom could out wait a glacier,  she listened, understood and at the end said " No".
The dog was sitting between mom and my brother.
In a white fury, he stood up fast.
About the time he was on his feet, the lab was on his chest, teeth an inch from his throat.
He said she was doing 
The low growl that means " I'm seriously going to ruin your day if you move!"
They stood for a moment, he apologized to mom, started breathing again, and looked at the dog
