Surtr is one the Jötnar, the 'giants' who came before the Æsir and Vanir (Norse gods), and were their eternal enemies. Surtr was a god of fire who it was prophesied would come from the south with a flaming sword. According to the Völuspá: Sutr ferr sunnan/með sviga lævi:/skinn af sverði/sól valtiva.
